3 April 2011 Last updated at 11:52 GMT Elizabeth Taylor’s love letters up for sale Letter written by Elizabeth Taylor in 1949 The 66 letters were all written between March and September 1949

A collection of letters written by a young Dame Elizabeth Taylor to her first love are to be sold at auction.

The 66 letters were penned by the late actress when was she was 17 years old to her first fiance, William Pawley, the son of a former US ambassador.

Written between March and November 1949, they give an insight into Dame Elizabeth’s rise to Hollywood fame.

The actress died in Los Angeles last month after a long history of ill health aged 79.

In one letter dated 28 March, Dame Elizabeth wrote: “I want our hearts to belong to each other throughout eternity.

“I want us to be ‘lovers’ always, even after we’ve been married seventy-five years and have at least a dozen great-great-grandchildren.”

In another letter she told Mr Pawley she was “completely convinced that you are the only man in the world that I shall ever love”.

By September, the actress was writing about giving back her diamond engagement ring at her fiance’s request, but appeared reluctant to end the relationship saying: “I know with all my heart and soul that this is not the end for us”.

The Oscar-winner went on to have seven husbands.

The collection was bought two years ago from Mr Pawley, who is now retired, a spokesman for RR Auctions said.

“We rarely come across a collection as rich as this, the letters are in a pristine condition,” Bobby Livingston said.

“William Pawley clearly loved and cherished them for all these years.”

The online auction will take place between May 12 and 19.

And furthermore, Dame Judi Dench keeps it shallow

And Furthermore
By Judi Dench, as told to John Miller

St. Martin’s. 268 pp. $26.99

Reviewed by Jessica Gelt

Although Judi Dench is perhaps best known to American film audiences for her Oscar-winning turn in Shakespeare in Love and for portraying “M” in the more recent James Bond movies, she is a live-theater actress at heart. And it is through this sepia-toned lens that she tells the story of her life onstage in her new memoir, And Furthermore.

The book begins with Dench as a little girl in a very theatrical family, before cataloging every role she played on stage, TV, and film over her more than 50-year career. It ends with her as a famous Dame of the British Empire, 76 years old and looking forward to many future roles.

Dench writes that And Furthermore should not be mistaken for an autobiography since John Miller covered much of her life in his 1998 biography, Judi Dench: With a Crack in Her Voice.

Whereas Miller’s book takes a look at acting within the larger context of her life, Dench writes that this new book aims to flesh out the gaps in the earlier biography. Unfortunately, those gaps are filled with encyclopedic detail about every production Dench has worked on, accompanied by lists of names of the many actors she has worked with. As a result And Furthermore fails to hang its prop hat on anything resembling Dench’s inner life or emotions. For fans of Dench, this is disappointing, especially since the actress is famous for taking her audience on rich emotional journeys with her work.

For example, even though the book is dedicated to Dench’s daughter, Finty, and her grandson, Sammy, very little about Finty is mentioned aside from the fact that she was born. Sammy is not mentioned once, although he does appear in several of the wonderful photos that pepper the book and are drawn from Dench’s personal files.

From some of Dench’s musings it is easy to gather that these blank spots might be purposeful. Toward the end of the book she laments that there is no longer any mystery surrounding famous actors. “Why should the public know everything?” she writes. “The joy of the theater is not really going and knowing that somebody had terrible difficulty playing this part, or why they did it; it is to go and be told a story, the author’s story, through the best means possible.”

Only in this instance is And Furthermore Dench’s story, and she the author (through ghost writer Miller). So although it’s nice to know that Dench played opposite such greats as John Gielgud, Ian McKellen, Kenneth Branagh, Anthony Hopkins, and Daniel Day-Lewis, we don’t learn anything new about these great actors.

We long for more personal anecdotes from Dench’s life, because when we get them they are really telling, often humorous, and quite lovely.

When Dench was a child, for example, she was sent to bed much earlier than her older brothers and she writes, “I remember so well going to bed and hearing them play cricket in the garden, and hearing all that life going on outside; I simply couldn’t bear it, and it’s still like that. I don’t like missing anything. … ”

Then there was the time when Dench was in her early 20s and a part of the famed Old Vic Company in London, playing the role of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Her parents attended every show, and once when she cried out the line “Where are my mother and father, Nurse?” her father called out from the stalls, “Here we are, darling, in Row H.”

Clearly her family was extremely close and quite unique. But in And Furthermore Dench dedicates two milquetoast paragraphs to her father’s death before she is off to Chapter 4, titled “Exciting Times at Nottingham and Oxford.”

The death of her husband, the actor Michael Williams, from lung cancer is also given very little ink. (Although a good bit of detail is dished out about the pair’s popular television show, A Fine Romance.) Still, Dench does not come off as insensitive; you can tell that these sad events affected her deeply. But she doesn’t pause to reflect on paper.

There are glimpses of what the book could have been if Dench had chosen to focus on fewer details and instead looked intently at the really important events and anecdotes.

For example, she is irritated with modern audiences’ TV-induced restlessness, and hates all the “little red lights” that cell phones emit during a show even when “Definitely no photographs” is printed in a program. The thought that audiences have changed since the late 1950s and grown to expect a completely different kind of entertainment is intriguing in and of itself.

The reader’s frustration at not being let in to the great actress’ life exists only because Dench – even hastily sketched – is such a charming, vivid, and compelling person. We want more. In the end, however, we are given an actor’s mask.

Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz was honoured with the 2,436th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 36-year-old actress who is awaiting the release of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” looked svelte in purple lace fitted dress at the event, reports dailymail.

She was accompanied by her husband, Spanish actor Javier Bardem, and close friend and co-star Johnny Depp. She thanked Depp for helping her learn English when she first moved to Los Angeles.

She said: “I want to thank the man with the hat. Let me tell you about the man with the hat. I came to Los Angeles for the first time in 1994, I spoke no English. I only knew how to say two things, two sentences. One was, ‘How are you?’, the other one was, ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp’.

“In the last 10 years I have worked with him twice and that has improved my English, so now I know how to say, ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp again!’ Thank you Johnny for your friendship, your friendship, your talent, you are such an inspiration to so many of us, always.”

Cruz hails from near Madrid, Spain, and made her acting debut on Spanish television when she was 16. She made her feature film debut in 1992 in “Jamon, Jamon”.

She won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2009 for her performance in ” Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

The actress gave birth to a baby boy, her first child, in January.

Will Amy Adams face Superman curse?

Apr 3rd

Amy Adams. (A HREF= Amy Adams. (WENN.COM photo)

Much has been made of the Superman curse, from George Reeves to Christopher Reeve to Brandon Routh (whose $400-million box office in Superman Returns wasn’t enough to keep him in tights and out of cheap indie movies).

But take a moment to shed a tear for the career of Amy Adams, who has signed on as the latest Lois Lane opposite Henry Cavill.

Playing Kal-El’s girlfriend — a thankless task actor-wise — ultimately did no favours to Margot Kidder’s career. And Kate Bosworth was an “it” girl (The Horse Whisperer, Beyond The Sea) before being miscast as Lois opposite Routh.

Let’s hope the mojo from those past Oscar nominations protects Adams from the Krypton curse.

TAKE THAT, YA PORCUPINE! Meanwhile, we’re no fans of the Farrelly Brothers’ plan to “re-boot” the Three Stooges franchise. But we’re happy to see the role of Curly go to a Canadian, Will Sasso — who has been unforgivably underused since Mad TV.

With two Stooges left to cast, production is skidded to begin late next month.

Speaking of curses, could you imagine what playing the Stooges would have done to the careers of Farrelly’s originally cast-ees, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey? You’d need at least two Oscars to wash that taste out of your mouth.

STILL SUCKING: Superman famously fights for truth, justice and the American way. So it didn’t go unnoticed when director Zack Snyder cast British actor Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel in his forthcoming reboot of the character.

“I’m not that worried about it,” Snyder says when asked about the consternation in some circles that an Englishman is donning the cape of an American icon. In fact, he says it wasn’t even a consideration when choosing Cavill over such contenders as True Blood’s Joe Manganiello.

“No, because Batman’s (British), too.”

Snyder is referring, of course, to Christian Bale who will reprise his role as the Caped Crusader shortly in The Dark Knight Rises. And let’s remember, London-raised Andrew Garfield has replaced Tobey Maguire as the titular wall-crawler in 2012′s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Then again, at least in the case of Superman, his origins aren’t so simple. Asks producer Deborah Snyder, “Isn’t he from another planet?”

Currently plans call for the new Superman movie to arrive in theatres in December 2012.

STILL SUCKING: While Hollywood scours for its next big movie trend — fairy tales among them — the vampire genre shows no signs of anemia.

Never mind the two — yes, two — Twilight sequels coming this fall and next summer.

There’s also, in no particular order: Stoker (with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman); Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (based on the best-seller); and Dark Shadows (starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton).

As well, director David Slade (30 Days of Night) is also attached to The Last Voyage of Demeter, about the crew unfortunate enough to transport Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to London.

Clearly, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs have some work to do before dethroning the undead.

Dib gets a chance to prove Oscar was wrong

BILLY DIB plans to embarrass the biggest promotion company in boxing, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy, by making a showman’s statement in his world title fight in July against one of the world’s best featherweights.

Dib has secured an IBF title fight against American Miguel Angel Garcia, who is undefeated, with 21 knockouts from 25 victories.

And Dib wants to prove the bigwigs wrong – Golden Boy Promotions dropped him after his only failure in 33 bouts.

Golden Boy signed Dib as he rose through the ranks, thanks largely to his close friendship with company stablemate Shane Mosley, but on his first defeat, in a world title fight against Steven Luevano in 2008, the promoters tore up his contract. Dib was gun-shy against Luevano, looking as if he had more style than substance, and De La Hoya’s company felt he was not exciting enough for television audiences.

However, Dib has since hired trainer Billy Hussein and put together 10 victories and one no-contest in 11 fights, including knockout wins in his past seven.

”After I lost to Luevano [by points decision], Golden Boy turned their back on me. They have had other fighters who have been knocked out and still gave them chances,” said Dib (31-1, 19KO, one no-contest).

”It wasn’t like I was embarrassed or lost easily. I proved I could mix it with the best but apparently it wasn’t entertaining enough for the TV networks. But I am a completely different fighter now. When I fought Luevano I was still a kid. I believe this is my last shot.”

Coincidentally, Golden Boy also dropped Mosley last year.

The IBF is one of the four major sanctioning bodies in the sport, and while Garcia, 23, will be the favourite, Dib, 25, is confident of becoming the first Australian featherweight to win the belt.

Geraldine Ferraro, 75, of New York, the first woman nominated for vice president on a major-party ticket, died March 26 of cancer. She started in a private law practice, then worked for the Queens district attorney and was elected to the U.S. House. Walter Mondale tapped her in 1984, and she revived the Democrats’ momentum before losing to Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Her U.S. Senate bids failed, but she became an ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Commission.

Harry Wesley Coover Jr., 94, of Kingsport, Tenn., known as the inventor of Super Glue, died March 26. He worked for Tennessee Eastman Co. when an accident helped lead to discovery of the adhesive, which was first sold in 1958. He and the chemists he worked with achieved more than 460 patents. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

Farley Granger, 85, of New York, the 1950s screen idol who starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope” and “Strangers on a Train,” died March 27. As a 16-year-old student at North Hollywood High, he became an overnight success in “The North Star.” A decade later, he walked away to learn his craft. He spent the rest of his career in a mix of movies, TV dramas and soap operas, and stage work, including “Deathtrap.”

Wenche Foss, 93, of Oslo, a leading Norwegian actress and activist, died March 29. She debuted in 1935 and appeared in many theater, film and television productions. She was a proficient mezzo-soprano who occasionally performed in operas. She contracted breast cancer more than 30 years ago and spoke about it to help others; she also aided children with Down syndrome, which her son died of.

Paul Baran, 84, of Palo Alto, Calif., whose work with packaging data in the 1960s was credited with helping development of the Internet, died March 26 of cancer. While working for RAND Corp., he pioneered the idea of “packet-switching,” in which small bundles of data are sent via network. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

David E. Davis, 80, of Ann Arbor, Mich., a pioneer in automotive journalism, died March 27 after cancer surgery. Twice the editor of Car and Driver, he split to start Automobile Magazine in 1985 with backing from media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Earlier he sold Volkswagen cars and men’s clothing, then worked on an auto assembly line and even tried racing but crashed. He also wrote auto ad copy for a Detroit firm.

Olga Ulyanova, 89, of Moscow, a niece of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin and the author of several books praising him, died March 25. Vladimir Ulyanov, who took Lenin as his nom-de-guerre in 1901, died in 1924 when she was almost 2 years old. She had fond memories of growing up in the Kremlin with other children of Bolshevik leaders. She worked as a professor of chemistry and physics at various universities.

Jose Alencar, 79, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, a textile magnate and former Brazilian vice president, died March 29 of cancer. He shared eight years with the country’s first working-class president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and served as a senator. He left home at age 14 to work as a dry goods salesman and opened his own store by age 18. He also operated a pasta factory before founding the Coteminas textile business.

Robert Tear, 72, of London, a Welsh tenor who also made a mark as a conductor and poet, died March 29 of cancer. He appeared with the Welsh National Opera at age 7 and sang in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. He became a member of the English Opera Group and performed on more than 250 recordings ranging from Monteverdi to Britten. He conducted several orchestras, and some of his poetry was set to music.

Dorothea Puente, 82, of Sacramento, who was convicted of killing elderly tenants and burying them in the backyard of her California boarding house, died March 27 in prison. She was known to give her tenants gifts and home-cooked meals, but authorities said she was in fact drugging them and stealing their money. A social worker told police something might be wrong at the home after a client disappeared.

Jose Comblin, 88, of Salvador, Brazil, a renowned theologian and leading exponent of liberation theology, died March 27. The movement, which advocates activism on behalf of the poor, swept Latin America in the 1960s. The Belgian-born priest moved to Brazil but was forced out by the military dictatorship in 1971. He then lived in Chile but was kicked out in 1980. He worked at seminaries in both nations.

Vimbeni Shembe, 77, of Johannesburg, a leader of a major but divided South African church, died March 28. He led one of four factions of the Shembe Nazareth Baptist Church, founded in 1910 in the Zulu tribal homeland and combining Christian beliefs and Zulu traditions. It has been divided since the 1970s in a family dispute over succession. The faith inspires a yearly 50-mile pilgrimage to the holy mountain of Nhlangakazi.

Lyudmila Gurchenko, 75, of Moscow, a popular Russian movie actress since the mid-1950s, died March 30. She became a star at age 21 when she played the lead in the 1956 comedy “Carnival Night,” which also was the debut of noted director Eldar Ryazanov. He directed her a quarter-century later in another of her most noted roles, as the waitress in “Station for Two.”

James Roberts, 87, of Beverly Hills, Calif., a former executive with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, died March 28 of emphysema. He joined as controller in 1954 and was promoted to executive director. His 35 years there included the establishment of the Margaret Herrick Library, a cinema research facility. Also, the academy moved into its new headquarters and tripled its staff.

Gil Clancy, 88, of Lynbrook, N.Y., a trainer who helped lead Emile Griffith to welterweight and middleweight titles, died March 31. The former college and Army boxer also worked with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Oscar De La Hoya and Ken Buchanan. He was a matchmaker for Madison Square Garden and an award-winning analyst, and he was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Claudia Heill, 29, of Vienna, an Olympic silver medalist in judo at the Athens Games, died after jumping out of a window. She also won silver at the European championships in 2001 and 2005. She retired a year after finishing fifth at the 2008 Beijing Games. She most recently worked as a coach of juniors.
